This is one of my top must haves, especially for the newborn stage. Having your baby right next to you means that you can easily check on them in the night, settle them if you need to, and if you’re breastfeeding or someone else can make up bottles for you, you don’t even need to get out of bed. I’ve included links to a mattress protector here (you definitely need at least one of those!) and some sheets that I found fitted better than the actual Chicco ones here.
Cellular blankets are blankets with holes in them, meaning they pose less of a suffocation risk for infants. These were essential when Babybel was a newborn as she was too small for the sleeping bags we had got her.
Muslins
Muslins are essential for cleaning up spit up, dribble, and tears. We also used them instead of bibs as we just found them easier to tuck in round Babybel than getting a bib on. These Muslinz ones are the softest, strongest ones we found; in fact we still use them now, over two years on.
You most definitely don’t want to be putting the big light or a bright lamp on when you’re getting up three times in the night. We keep this night light on all night – it has different colour and brightness settings, which meant we could set it at a level that didn’t disturb our sleep, but allowed us to see during the night wakes.
The amount of nappy changes a newborn needs is mind blowing! Instead of having to go upstairs every time we needed to change one, we kept this nappy caddy, along with a changing mat, downstairs, filled with all the essentials. It also hooked onto our travel cot perfectly.
Hooded baby towels are great for keeping your little one snug and warm after a bath. We found these ones the perfect size and snuggly soft.
Small hangers for tiny baby clothes are essential. We’re still using these ones now.
Another one that we’re still using is the Philips Avent Baby Care kit. Including nail clippers, digital thermometer, hair care items, and more, this gets used at least weekly.
If we have another one, I’ll definitely be getting a sling for using round the house but this 4-in-1 carrier was used on most of our journeys out of the house, up until Babybel was around 14 months old, when she decided that she wanted to walk everywhere!
If you’re planning on breastfeeding, there are many items designed to make your life easier. Here are my favourites:
Sore nipples are a given at the beginning and this stuff made the pain so much more bearable.
These were my favourite ones. They are easy to clip open and closed with one hand, and washed really well.
I needed to use breast pads for quite a long time so reusable ones were essential as I didn’t want to be adding any more single use items to landfill.
Lansinoh disposable breast pads
The reusable breast pads looked a little lumpy under some outfits so I would occasionally use disposable ones as they weren’t so obvious. They were also handy to keep in bags and pockets in case of emergencies as they come individually wrapped.
It took us ten weeks to establish breastfeeding (read our story here) so a breast pump was essential. I don’t have anything bad to say about this one; it saved my sanity and my breastfeeding journey during those ten weeks.
Ideal for freezing any additional milk you may have pumped.
We obviously needed bottles as we struggled to establish breastfeeding, and these were the ones we decided on. The main draw for me was that they self-sterilised in the microwave so no need for big bulky sterilisers sitting around the kitchen. They also come in smaller packs , which we found really useful Mam bottle set of 2.
Whether breast feeding or bottle feeding, the chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time sitting around snuggling your baby. Having this extra long phone charger meant that I could charge my mobile wherever we were having our snuggles.
Teething started for us around 4 months and we have tried nearly everything on the market to ease Babybel’s pain and discomfort. Here are the ones that worked best for us:
Babybel started showing signs of teething at around four months old, and at that age she didn’t really have the coordination to get anything other than her hand in her mouth. The Nuby mitt goes on like a glove, and the silicone bit on the edge is perfect for babies to bite on.
There’s a reason that Sophie has been bought by so many people around the world, and that’s because babies love her!
We used teething powder before bed as it seemed to ease the pain and irritation a bit and allow Babybel to get some sleep. It’s a herbal remedy which is suitable from three months.
For the first few weeks, babies don’t really do much so there’s not a lot of need for entertainment. As they get bigger and more aware of their surroundings, they definitely enjoy experiencing new sights, sounds, and textures. Here are a few of our favourites:
Once Babybel had learned to sit up, she wanted to do it all of the time! Obviously to start with she wasn’t strong enough to manage it for more than around 30 seconds, so we got this Nuby sit me up sit to help her sit with Mummy and Daddy and be nosy at everything around her.
Babybel hated tummy time, apart from when she was on this water mat, looking at all of the different colours and feeling the water swishing around.
Paired with a foil blanket and some music, this disco light sensory activity kept Babybel entertained for ages. Now at two and a half she asks for the ‘party light’ on so that she can do some dancing.
