New Mum Tips – Nappy Changing

If you’ve never changed a nappy before, or if you’re like me who hadn’t changed one for nearly 20 years, it can seem like a really daunting task. How do you keep them still? What if they pee on you? How do you get their clothes off in the event of a poonami? Here are my top tips for navigating the nappy changes.

Tip 1: This one doesn’t seem to be common as I see a lot of people saying you don’t need one but get yourself a changing table or dedicated changing space. We’ve used Babybel’s changing station for the majority of at home nappy changes, getting dressed in the mornings, and the bedtime routine, and now, at 18 months old, it’s the only place she will keep still get all those things done. If we try to change her nappy or get her dressed anywhere else, it is like wrestling an alligator, but with the added fun of having to keep her flailing arms and legs out of a dirty nappy! The one we have has drawers and storage space in it, so once she’s grown too big for it, we can still use it for clothes and toys.

Tip 2: Get everything ready before you take the nappy off. Get your wipes, nappy sack, and cream ready, unfold the new nappy and get the tabs out, and make sure that all items of clothing are moved out of the way. Then you don’t have to worry about wipes getting stuck in the packet (seriously, wipe manufacturers, what is that all about?) and you can put the dirty nappy straight into the sack.

Tip 3: Make sure the flappy bits of the nappy (the leg cuffs and the waistband) are all untucked. This doesn’t prevent all poo explosions but it definitely reduces the amount that gets out.

Tip 4: Vests  can be rolled down in case of poonami! The shoulders are designed so that you can fold them down, meaning that when there is a poo explosion or a pee leak, you don’t have to worry about smearing anything over their face or hair. Mind blowing, right?

Tip 5: Onesies, baby grows, and jumpsuits are the easiest items of clothing to change nappies in.

Trousers and tights obviously have to be taken off, and when you’re in the newborn stage and changing 12 nappies a day, you want whatever is quickest and easiest to get on and off.

Unless we were actually going out somewhere, Babybel lived in baby grows for the first 12 weeks or so (lockdown for most of it meant that we didn’t really have much opportunity to go anywhere anyway!)

Tip 6: Plus nappies are best for nighttime. You hear a lot about babies suffering for nappy leaks at night time, and Babybel was no different. That was until we discovered that the + next to the size of the nappies didn’t mean that it was a half size, but actually meant that the nappy was more absorbent (I know). So now we use size 5 during the day, and 5+ at night.

Tip 7: This is more of a bonus tip; keep a change of outfit for you in your changing bag, along with a change of outfit for your baby. After experiencing being both peed and pood onion the first two weeks, I learned to take an outfit change for me!

I’d love to hear what your favourite nappy changing hack is!
